Whew, first time online in ages.

I've spent the morning being semi-productive. I haven't put all my clothes away yet, but I've been working on my Young Adult short story due last week. I've just spent the last hour or so, in fact, writing about farts. What is the world coming to?

P.S. What the hell is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is similar to ANZAC day. It's a day where those in America remember/celebrate those who died fighting for their country, always celebrated the last Monday in May.

I assumed it was something like that. Thanks.

You know, whilst I was posting that, the phrase "fighting for their country" stuck in my mind. Because "fighting for their country" would seem to imply that it was some sort of fight to either keep or retrieve one's country from another's grasp. It still feels like a strange phrase, considering so many Americans have died fighting other people's wars that didn't necessarily directly (in a 'home soil' way) involve America. *scratches head*

Honey, you're talking to an Australian. We bloody well invented fighting other people's wars. That's what the ANZAC spirit is all about. World War I, World War II, Vietnam ... We lost millions of young men fighting other people's wars, and it's not like we have much of a surplus population.

Man, I was just thinking on this more, and Australian history kinda sucks. We're just the dumb younger cousin tagging along, the one who always gets more injured than the local kids when climbing trees; the one who always gets stuck with the stolen apples when the farmer comes running.

SCENE: WORLD WAR I
"Hey Australia! Want to play war?"
"Sure!"
"OK. You go stand in Gallipoli. We'll be over here."
"Yay!"
*other countries stand around and snigger for awhile*

SCENE: WORLD WAR II
Australia: "Hey, guys? Um, Britain? Can you come play? I'm getting in trouble ..."
"Uh, sorry. We're busy. Some other day, 'kay?"
"... Um. 'Kay. It's just that ... y'know, we're in a bit of trouble. Singapore an' all? Please?"
"La la la la, can't HEAR you!"

It's supposed to represent the day when you pause and think about all the people that have died in all our wars. Basically, died defending our freedom (at least, in America...).

When I was little, it was different. I don't think it was always on a Monday.... Anyway, on Memorial Day, every house would have an American flag flying in their front yard. There were memorial commerical snippety things and people actually thought about it and gave thanks for their freedom.

Now, it's just a reason to have barbecues and a three day weekend. *shrug* Times change.
