I was thinking in Novel class yesterday about the word "aesthetic". It's a word that always seems slightly awkward, and I thought about the fact that it never quite felt comfortable, probably due to the fact that it reminds one so much of "anaesthetic".

And then I realised: "anaesthetic" probably derives from the same root: "an-" being one of those negative prefixes, and then "aesthetic" probably derives from some word meaning "to feel".

It was one of those little beam-of-light-shining-from-above moments that make one feel simultaneously enlightened and very, very stupid.

I had never figured that out before, and thus just had an identical moment.

Hey, nifty. Can I put this in my language research journal?

What's your language research journal?

I have a journal in which I record nifty and striking stuff about language and linguistic varities - prosodic features, syntax, lexion, semantics and in this case, morphological features. I randomly write down what people say and analyse it - it's of great assistance to the English Language course work.
Actually I'm halfway tempted to make an entire section on you and your intriguing, nifty and unique variety - heavily infuenced by various British linguistic features.
(Oh, how I love English Language.)
