Mar. 23rd, 2005 12:09 amI was thinking in Novel class yesterday about the word "aesthetic". It's a word that always seems slightly awkward, and I thought about the fact that it never quite felt comfortable, probably due to the fact that it reminds one so much of "anaesthetic".
And then I realised: "anaesthetic" probably derives from the same root: "an-" being one of those negative prefixes, and then "aesthetic" probably derives from some word meaning "to feel".
It was one of those little beam-of-light-shining-from-above moments that make one feel simultaneously enlightened and very, very stupid.
