whiskey or whisky?
Whisky is the spelling used for the Scottish drink and in British English generally; whiskey is used for the drink produced in Ireland and in American English generally.

is also made from corn mash and the best comes from Kentucky. I lived near a Maker's Mark distillery in Kentucky for a few years. The days they fermented the mash were intoxicating indeed.

I have little opinion on the best whisk(e)y myself, as don't like it. Sorry to disappoint!

I needed the correct British spelling for a story I was working on, which is set in London.

Yes, I have had that spelling corrected by my British beta as well.

And given the collection of bottles in my collection, one would think I would know how to spell the term for Scotch as opposed to the term for Bourbon.

Well...they're both correct, merely regional specific. *points to post*

I actually used the brackets around the 'e' to suggest that both spellings are viable... 9_9 This is what comes from studying feminism for a semester.

Bourbon was, of course, named for the Bourbon (pron. "Boo-bo(n) [almost inaudible 'n'] family, who were the reigning family in France at the time of the American and French revolutions (until Louis &c got their heads snicked off!)

According to the Marker's Mark distillery, bourbon was named for Bourbon County, KY where the first distillery was constructed.

You know, they (the distillers) were all probably too drunk to write an accurate history of their product.

Yep, those poor Bourbons, can't have your cake and not share it with the 3rd estate. I'm a French major.

*gasp* It's named for the county? My Fr. Revolutions teacher lied. Lied! (Although I claim it's still indirectly named for the royal family.)

Hee. I loved the Fr. Revolution...particularly when I did it for the second time. I understood it more. Did more of the reading, too.

According to Daria (always an accurate historical source), the bit about the cake was actually taken from a story about a princess written by Rousseau. One day I'll check that claim...

Randomly, are you a French History major, or a French Language major? And if the former, have you read any Peter McPhee? He was my lecturer. I'm just curious. :)

I am a French Literature and Language major. I was never very good with dates, so history was right out.

I have not read any Peter McPhee. I shall go hunt his work down now. Thanks muchly, you will have tipped my "To be Read" pile of books right over on the bed.

Ah, he was just my lecturer on the Fr. Revolutions. I know he was an excellent lecturer, and I'm pretty sure his book(s?) would be readable. Not sure. Can't remember if I read the extract I was supposed to read. *whistles innocently*
