The wisdom of silence
Nov. 20th, 2007 09:53 amI saw a bright-yellow Hummer yesterday as I was walking home from the station. It's only the first or second I've ever seen on the roads. I wanted to take the driver out and shake him, and say, "What is WRONG with you? Not only do you purchase a fuel-guzzling car as oil reserves are starting to dwindle and prices are leaping through the roof, not to mention the fact that we're having a 37°C day in NOVEMBER for fuck's sake, but you buy a fuel-guzzling car that is THE UGLIEST FUCKING CAR I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. It's like a shoebox on wheels! Painted yellow! What happened, did you get your aesthetic sense surgically removed at birth? Or is this revenge on the bored-looking woman sitting next to you in the passenger seat? Are you just an underperformer in the bedroom?"
But I did none of these, because it is unwise to piss off a man driving an urban tank when you are not.

I can top this ...
Date: 2007-11-20 01:17 am (UTC)I saw an example of said monstrousity in black; covered in, as the young kids call it, vehicular bling. As if that wasn't bad enough, it was advertising itself as a *limousine*.

I can understand one person being both sexually insecure and completely devoid of taste. It seems there are enough that it's a business opportunity.
The jack boot of imperialism is seen as glamorous. *shakes head*

Well, it's like the whole meat issue. Whether or not you believe humans should eat no meat at all, the studies show that meat consumption should be minimal, and it often is in poorer countries. As soon as they get wealthier, they take on Imperial diets: white bread, white rice, lots of processed foods and meat. As they start eating wealthier foods (particularly meat), and they start to get the "wealthy" diseases. And funnily enough, a lot of these people would be much healthier if they stuck to their old diets, as now they're richer they're not going to die of lack of food or "poor"/hygiene-related diseases.
There's these studies done on a European country (I think it was one of the "four Norse ones", as I inaccurately think of them, possibly Denmark? or Finland?) that was under Nazi subjugation during WW2. While they were occupied, their meat consumption went right down to bugger-all, as did their incidence of heart attacks (and presumably strokes, and kidney stones, and Alzheimer's and all the other lovely "rich" diseases). As soon as the war ends, meat consumption goes up, and correspondingly so do deaths from heart disease.
Bah.
