Why is it that even though you've installed the wireless router exactly according to directions, that it now not only won't talk to either computer I have set up, but also won't talk to the internet? I have turned it off at the wall. If it won't work, it doesn't get any power. This is a punishment, and also a sensible energy saving whatsit.

I am finally connected to the internet at home! Admittedly by plugging directly into the modem (having moved my enormous heavy PC to the other end of the house in order to install the wireless router as my laptop didn't have an ethernet socket), but it's done. Only took me all morning.

God, I wanted to leave for work an hour and a half ago. :(( At least I got this done, and our contents insured. I can breathe slightly easier when leaving the house.

Off to work. I have to get a stupid manuscript off the the printer today, liek OMG it should have been ready a month ago!!. I don't care. It wasn't my project until last Friday. Hmph. Still, CD's burnt, and MS is printed, so I just have to arrange for a courier now. Then get back to the other new project I was given on Friday, and finish off putting in the changes to the Quark file. I hate Quark. Why can't we all switch to InDesign? InDesign makes SENSE. Stupid Quark and its complete lack of "insert symbol" menu item, or in fact anything useless. ARGH.

Or maybe I should do the other OTHER MS I'm working on, where I have to create image files of all the headings because we don't have the font the author wants in Postscript format.

I also want to read over the page of notes I took during yesterday's Production Meeting. It's a big long to-do list (except for the bit which is a list of all the new books I'm taking on), and I don't remember a single item on there.

I wonder if I can pick up some worms on the way to work? Hmm. (For our BRAND NEW WORM FARM, you see. It's very exciting, but the hardware shop was all out of composting worms, so it's mostly just collecting dew on its roof at the moment.)

I had a similar problem when I set up my router, a netgear one. The problem was that the router and modem's ISP coding didn't match up.

I may have to sit here looking intelligent pretending I understood that. :/

Heh. I know the feeling when it comes to DSL type stuff.

How do I find out if the ISP coding matches up? Because I know now from extinguishing possibilities that though the modem is connected to the internet, I cannot reach the internet through the router, though the computers CAN connect to the routers.

You go to the modem's site to set up the modem. It's different for each one, I believe. One of the menu options is to manually enter the ISP. I had to chage the last two numbers to .1.0. for one of the addresses.

(I'm being as clear as I can. The whole DSL stuff is like a foreign language for me.)

Hmm. I went to the router's site to set that up, but the modem we were given only has a CD with an idiot-proof software installer on it.

We're on cable, not DSL, so I don't know where to go from here. :((

Right. I meant router.

Havev you tried calling the router's company?

I thought that I had better look them up and see if they have an Australian number. I found their website. They have a trouble-shooting page for setting up the router.

I have since discovered the ethernet cable that my ISP provided us with Does Not Work (only part of the problem).

WE NOW HAVE TEH INTERWEBS! Thank you so much for your help.

I hope that that is only a temporary move for the computer?

... I guess we're not meeting up tonight to go home together as you've left too late... :(

I love you!

It is. For installing purposes only. It is on the floor.

BAH! I worked "overtime" yesterday. I can leave early today. Besides, no-one is here. Where shall we meet???

I love you, too!

Worm farm?

Don't get me wrong, I understand the concept... but you have to go buy the worms from the hardware store?

As opposed to, say, a bait shop, or even just going out into the yard and digging? And for another, don't they have some kind of "worm-calling" contest in Australia?

Well, where we bought the farm was an enormous hardware shop, something like the hardware version of Wal-mart (she says, never having stepped foot in the States). It has an enormous garden section, including live plants, fertilizer, potting mix, seeds, and so on and so forth. Normally they'd also have worms, to sell alongside their worm farms.

I could certainly go to a bait shop, but not being a fisher, I don't know the location of a local one. And as I have discovered from reading my information booklet, the common-or-garden worm is a digger, as opposed to a composter. Different breeds, and diggers eat dirt, not kitchen scraps. The two types also require differing conditions.

I know not of this worm-calling contest, although this is a BIG country. It doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I'd insert a cool reference to Dune here, but it's been a long time since last I read it. Instead I provide a link to an awesome icon of [livejournal.com profile] coffeegrrl23's.

If the router is still not working I'm happy to try and have a fiddle with it next time I'm over. These things are a pain to get working it's like "let's try this, no that didn't work, now if I change this setting slightly does that make a difference?"

That would be very useful.

I need to get in there again and fiddle more myself (in the hope that I can stumble on to an answer), but that's looking unlikely time-wise before next week. :/

At least we can still get to the internet through my PC, which can be plugged in directly to the modem.
