Christmas letter
Dec. 21st, 2006 09:22 pmI wrote this for my family's Christmas newsletter, and thought I might as well reproduce it here.
The Christmas pudding was fine, by the way, if you're interested. It was only a little singed, and went down a treat.
This year saw
delirieuse undertake some freelance editing jobs, do quite a bit of work in various nursing homes (she's now a pro at Care Plans) – including the Gastro Outbreak of '06 – and join a morris dancing team.
It's been said that you should try everything in life except for folk dancing, but
delirieuse's never been a one for those ticky lists that tell you what you should read or watch or try in your lifetime. This year she's hopped, skipped, ranted (something like a complicated hop) and Nancy Awful'd her way through festivals and markets. Her morris dancing group (properly known as a “side”), Brandragon, have about 17 active dances, and she is proud to say that she's learnt almost all of them, except for Ducks in the Privy. Her first “dance out” (morris-speak for performance) was at sunrise on May Day, the traditional beginning of the morris year, and since then she's taken her first trip to South Australia to dance out at Penola (and try some of the finest wines of the Coonawarra), and later danced out Euroa and Maldon. The last dance-out of the year was at the Collingwood Children's Farm market in 37 degree heat, under a pall of smoke from the bushfires.
This year has also seen
delirieuse continue to experiment in the kitchen, as she's continued to explore her veganism (that's vegetarian with bells on – no dairy or eggs). Her proudest moment is making vegan madeleines (which, like most French pastries, are mostly butter and eggs with a little sugar and flour) that her friend
hollyhearth, who ate and loved madeleines in France, said were wonderful. She has also successfully made Christmas pudding (one of which was eaten at the morris Christmas picnic). She still has tweaks she wants to make for next year. This year she also successfully catered two parties, almost single-handedly, including the birthday cake made out of madeleines for
hollyhearth, covered in a strawberry–balsamic sauce. She has begun a “food blog”, which can be found at http://www.reynardsfeast.net.
