I have loved the idea of sugar skulls pretty much forever, and I have wanted to make my own. Sadly, I have discovered that they are apparently not possible to make vegan (egg white is what glues the sugar together), which puts the boot in the idea far more solidly than the fact that I'd have to import the moulds (being on a different Continong and all).

I have found a way of getting my brightly coloured skulls that are ALSO vegan. Rejoice!

Mexican Sugar (-y biscuit) Skulls. I'm gonna make me some for Hedda's pointy hat party tomorrow. And they're going to be ginger, because ginger=teh most delicious biscuits EVAR.

Yay! Skull biscuits! *does the sugar skull dance*

And as to your subject line, I was like, "Pfft! You are not, you're posting!"

*giggles*

I shall have to post my bikkies. They're not quite as spanky as those listed, as my icing had a distressing habit of spreading after it was piped on. Next time I'm looking into different, stiffer icing.

Maybe a royal? Do they have Vegan royal icing? I do not remember what goes into royal.

Not sure. I could look it up ...

This time around I made it with egg replacer (a whole bunch of starch, essentially) and icing mixture (fine sugar with cornstarch mixed in) and then, when I got desperate, more cornstarch. And there was a bit of lemon juice as well. I was considering next time throwing in some butter and creaming that in, or maybe some almond meal. Isn't that what marzipan is, essentially? Ground almonds with sugar?

Anyway, it was a learning experience.

Yes, that's basically marzipan.

I'm going to have to see if I can find a recipe. It may be more labour-intensive than all that, though ... I can't say I've never seen directions on how to make marzipan before.
