Taxi ... or cab??

I have no idea anymore. So I thought I'd start up a community* called [livejournal.com profile] uncommon_tongue. The purpose is to get English speakers of all over together to talk about the differences in language. Harry Potter fandomers ought to be particularly interested - we have "britpicking" raised to the level of an Olympic sport. And for some reason, damn near all of my writing seems to be set in England, and while I'm generally good at britpicking (Australian English is very similar, and I grew up watching BBC programs), sometimes my brain turns to soup and I get paranoid about whether I'm using the correct word. And hey, were I to ever set a story (or fic, I suppose) in the US or Canada, it might be nice to get some feedback about language. Also, have you ever wanted to know about Australian English? (Probably not, but humour me.)

And plus, I am just a HUGE language geek. So go! Join up! Let's get a debate going about how Australia and the UK use taps, but the US uses faucets!

Apparently I have so far today written 666 words for NaNo, bringing me up to a total of 7500. I am amused.

Oh, and a special little message to the mosquitos who have been feasting on my blood: I hope you die. I hope my blood contains some substance that you're allergic to. That'd be a nice irony.

*actually, I created it ages ago, but haven't bothered to start it up or do anything with it.

Well, fine. I tried searching through interests, but couldn't find anything. That sucks. Ah, well.

This happened just today: http://www.livejournal.com/users/darketherdream/261478.html

Apparently 'pants' is my new favourite word.

tss. This one will be better. It has the word 'tongue' in the title, the community will surely thrive!

"Fairy floss" is actually one of the earliest names for spun sugar, apparently. And of course, the Brits call it "candy floss".

'candy floss' - I like that. I will adopt and revive it! Did you read down to the bit where [livejournal.com profile] slappytanker talks about the word 'pants' and it's novel new use?

Nifty! *joins up*

Well done with Nano! Wh00tle!
(If I ever said it wasn't difficult I clearly had ROCKS in my head. *whimpers about her novel for ten minutes* Well y'know I do, just it appears I have a few more than I thought.)

With sufficient quantities of absinthe, either the mosquitos will die in some way, or you won't care about them anyway. Problem solved.

(might hamper the Nano efforts, though ... )

Allergic to mozzies? I feel your pain.

(and of course, when you're out with a group of ten and you're the *only* one they're going for, that just doubles the joy)

At our schools, the school buses for handicapped children are about half the length of or regular school buses. No idea why. But if you say someone is short bus special, it means they're mentally handicapped, basically. It's not PC. *hangs head*

I'd gathered as much, except for the "half the length" part. Didn't know that ...

I think it's because they don't have as many special needs children as the other kids, so they don't need such a big bus? *shrug* I have no idea.
