Do you know how difficult it is to find a Hannukah card? Quite hard.

*ponders* The word "Hannukah" is spelt two different ways on the same card. Is this some sort of Jewish thing I don't understand?

This Hannukah/Chanukah card is shiny. It's very pretty. And the message inside is way better than most Christmas cards.

it seems australia and britain etc spell it with the 'c'. the americans leave it off. there are literally about 20 spellings of the word. so you could spell it with an 'x' and it'd probably be right.

and finding chanukkah cards in melbourne is a lot easier than anywhere else in the country :D (be damned if i can find any. for tink, i ended up stamping the inside of an xmas card with chanukkah stamps. and the front of the card had a tree that didn't have a star? so i drew a mogendavid on the top :D)

*giggles* Ah. That makes sense. The "ch" denotes that back-of-the-throat H sound, doesn't it? So it doesn't make much sense leaving it off... But perhaps that's just me, rattling on about things I know very little about.

Well, Melbourne does have that large Jewish community through Carnegie and Caulfield. I eventually went to "Cardiology", and complained up and down two long aisles of Christmas cards until I managed to find one. One. *rolls eyes* Way to cater for other religions, knobsticks.

Ah, the self-customisation jobs. I have been doing that to most of my cards. :D

I do remember learning the Dreidel Song from South Park, when it was just a wacky, alternative cartoon on SBS. I was randomly singing it a while later, and one of my Jewish friends does this double-take and is like, "You know the Dreidel Song?" I only knew a couple of lines. But I felt pretty special. ;)

yes. when americans say chanukkah, they don't make the traditional 'ch' noise. they just say 'h'

first time i went to melbourne i was stunned by the jewish community thing. i was like '.. there are STORES that sell jewish stuff?!?!' i was about 11 at the time. :)

the dreidel song rocks. you should hear some other chanukkah songs, tho. they just rock. they crack me up.

Pffbbt. The "ch" noise is the fun part.

*grins* It's pretty amazing, all the different communities here.

I'd love to. Could I download recordings somewhere? My two old Jewish friends have fallen out of contact with me... (the one mentioned above hates me because I wouldn't go out with him, and has moved to Canberra, in any case.)

i don't know whether you could download them anywhere... but i'm sure the funny one i'm thinking of is on cd. if so, i'll copy it onto the comp and i could send it to you or something. it's not like a comedy song. it just makes me lauuuughgh.

are you sending Av a card? Cause she's tried to email me her address...but it keeps bouncing back. I've draw a christmas comic strip to send up to her...but I don't have her address...do you reckon you could email it to me?

...it took me three reads to figure out that you weren't talking about a medical building. >(*o*)

Nah, at Casey's once, I'm pretty sure. In that middle room that he decorated with the Communist flags for the end of year party.

Hannukah kicks arse. My aunt pointed out to me that it's an excellent excuse to eat lots of fried food, as the oil is symbolic. In any case, there be lots of doughnuts about. Huzzah!

Mmm...food.

Hee! I went reading up on Chanukah, and I discovered that one. I love the fact that you could have lunch at the local fish and chip shop and blame it on a religious holiday. ^_^
