I've installed and played Arcanum...
...and I'm already dead. Like, within half an hour or so. Feh. I think this is a strong hint to a) buy more bullets, b) choose a better second weapon and c) put a point into healing spells/tech.
I like it so far, though. It's reminding me of Diablo. I'm finding it a little hard to navigate so far, and considering I've read more of the manual than usual (ie, some of it), that doesn't seem right. So, I can go back to the game tomorrow and keep dying until I master the basics, or I can actually read the manual.
Choices, choices.

IMHO...

How far've you gotten?

And guns are nice ... but not nearly as useful as a sword, because of the whole hit'n'miss thing.
Still, I loved Arcanum, and hope you enjoy it.

I'm sure I will!

Date: 2003-12-11 09:00 am (UTC)Manuals are overrated, I'm sure :)
I got Arcanum a while ago, but barely played it - I'd just finished a Baldur's Gate binge, and got PlaneScape:Torment and Arcanum thinking that I wanted more of something similar. As it turned out, I played about 2 hours of each, then played lots of first-person stuff (Quake IIIA, Half-Life, and then ... Morrowind. Boy did that cost me some late nights ... ). And then, three weeks ago or so, as if a switch flipped over, I got a suddent urge to stop my latest Morrowind game, download updated BG II mods (and maybe some new ones), and start a new game. Then, after playing that party a bit I decided to load my old not-quite-solo game (it was intended to be as much soloing as possible, but I picked up Aerie right at the start, and she's still there, and now so are a couple of others ... Oh well, party of 4 is almost soloing, right ?).
Errr, anyway, Arcanum seems neat, and I'm sure I'll make time for it one day :)

Date: 2003-12-11 10:01 am (UTC)I've only played a little Baldur's Gate on a friends console-that-wasn't-his-xbox, myself. As in, only one session. We're on about the second quest, I think. And I haven't played PlanetScape at all, though I have a feeling he owns that one too. I really suck at FPS on PCs--after my startling proficiency with Halo I have decided that I can clearly only play FPS on consoles. I can never remember where all the keys are, so I get my arse handed to me on a platter.
Luckily, I haven't become too obsessed with Morrowind yet--my computer only runs it passably, and after I got killed in the windmill and then got lost in some rocky pass, I got distracted by other things. It helped that each time the game loaded the next section it took several minutes. Give me Diablo II any day. ;)
(Gods, I haven't even finished the third level of Diablo. That reminds me...)
I haven't played too many games, because my money tends to be spent on graphic novels or comics or books. And I'm currently unemployed...
