If one is being "hippocritical", does that mean someone who is critical of the Hippocratic oath?

I think you mean "hypocritical", brainiac. *rolls eyes*

This week, with my new moneys, I am buying:

  • fabric for the masquerade costume

  • absinthe & a spoon if I can get one

  • my comics which will hopefully be coming in

  • a simcard for my phone

  • Placebo & Eddie tix

I may be rather poor by Friday...
I wonder if they sell sugar cubes in a supermarket?

D00d, I have a recipe stuck to my fridge for absinthe!!! :D

btw, where abouts and what night is Placebo? I'm going- I don't care what anyone says- and I think Petri wants to go, too... I can part with money for them... (Particularly seeing as I missed Coldplay and the Counting Crows) :(

Ah, I have spent a scholarly evening researching absinthe, and I'm even pretty sure of the brand I'm going to buy. Some absinthes are a lot better than others, of course, and you want the right balance of fruity undertones and anise. Too much anise overpowers the delicate flavours. Whether the absinthe louches properly is also all-important; it shows that the correct ingredients have been used. Louching is when water is added to absinthe a drop at a time, over a sugar cube. The water added to the absinthe clouds it, as the essential oils (such as those derived from anise and wormwood) cannot mix with water.

And absinthe isn't as toxic as the prohibitionists claim. Yes there are trace elements of thujone, but even with traditional absinthe, you would die from alcohol poisioning long before you absorbed enough thujone to kill you. Most of the ill-effects reported were due to the surge in absinthe's popularity amongst the lower classes, and hence cheaper, less quality drinks being produced, with dangerous additives. You can kill a rat by giving it the same amount of essential oil of coriander as essential oil of wormwood.
Its hallucinatory effects (even of the older recipes) are also over reported. A "secondary" effect to the alcohol buzz has been reported, arriving at about the second or third drink and lasting for about 20-30 minutes. Any more than three drinks and you'll be far too drunk to notice anything.

OMFG. If we wind up going to Placebo together... D00d, my sister says there's somewhere in St. Kilda which sells absinthe... how much would that kick arse? *g*

We SO have to. In theory I may be meeting my friend Mickey at lunch tomorrow to buy tickets, or at least arrange them. Email me your mobile # so we can try to arrange this...

I know there's a bar on High St that sells absinthe...
Or you could come back to my place and we could drink the absinthe I will buy, which will of course be much better quality. *grins*

There's quite a few places that do - there's no legal restrictions of the sale of absinthe in Australia, and yes, the stuff you get here does contain wormwood (the hallucinogen that makes you writhe around in a spa bath wearing a black coat, Trent Reznor style).

Ginger in Brunswick St and Automatic at crown also serve it, plus I'll likely have some left over from my housewarming should Dani, me, and whoever else (including yourself, tho we've not met) feel like heading back there after the gig (I live near the end of Acland St where all the restaurants and bars are).

I just hope I can still score tickets ...

Speak to me in person some time, and I'll tell you all about wormwood, and the myths surrounding absinthe.

No, that's Hippocratical. Hippocritical is critical of hippopotami, of course.

By the way, hi.

Then why not simply critical of horses? That's what hippos means, after all: horse. Hippopotamus is simply "horse of the river".

Common usage.

Like homophobia literally means "fear of same," (don't even get me started on the mixture of languages) but in common usage is fear and/or loathing of queer people.

I don't think you could argue common usage here; if you were translating a word that's commonly used, perhaps, but not a word that isn't, because it patently doesn't exist.

You seem to be well into the costume phase of the masquerade ball. How might the rest of the plans be going?

I'm thinking setting it in August. When I don't get home ridiculously late, I'm putting a poll up re: dates, then I'm going to start looking into venues in earnest.

Is still flexible at this stage...

I thought you couldn't come anyway, no matter what month, so it didn't matter.
