*laughs for about 5 minutes*

No seriously, I'm getting dizzy. Woo. Headspins.

EEK! Krilite in BMB!

I swear, are you people trying to kill me with mirth?

...I used mirth in a sentence. Go me.

Watched Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead on cable today. Stayed up specifically for that purpose. 'Twas brilliant, although I was less than impressed with the strange Western music at the beginning and end.

I wish I was male. The two characters I would like to play best are Judas [from Jesus Christ Superstar] and Rosencrantz (well, I'd also like to play Guildenstern, but when I cast this play in my imagination, Liam plays the more somber, intelligent Guildenstern and I play the innocent, slightly clownish Rosencrantz. Thinking about it tonight, I'd cast Zan as Hamlet. *sigh* Or I suppose I could play the Player. That'd be fun, too). All the best roles are written for men. I hate being female with a violent passion, sometimes. Usually at least once a month (sorry, couldn't help that one).

On a side note, I have now made my peace with Gary Oldman. I hated him in Fifth Elephant Element, but he rocks as Rosencrantz. I now think he'll probably make a good Sirius.

My friends list has just hit 200 people. I think I need a life outside LJ. *ponders that for all of two seconds* Nah.

My most recent acquisition addition is verianVerian. Found via [livejournal.com profile] handmadebooks. Because ya know, what I really need are more projects to get obsessive over. There's a folder in my bookmarks called "Obsessions" for precisely this reason. Feh.

So, my current "as-soon-as-I-have-a-job-and-therefore-money" projects? Making my own books. With handmade paper, and stitching, and covers, and press. Damn, but I've wanted a printing press for so very, very long. They have one (a big fuck-off antiquated one) outside the Monash Uni library (where I did work at their rare books dept), and I used to walk by and covet it so badly.

I'm just one big anachronism, aren't I?

I even know where to get type in Melbourne: at the Melbourne Museum of Printing's Type Foundry. Of course, I have no idea where to get a press somewhat like [livejournal.com profile] verian's. Nor do I know how to actually use one. Before seeing Verian's website, I didn't know that you could purchase one small scale. I have been fantasising about making my own, and wishing I'd payed more attention in London in that random market we were at, where I saw someone selling type. I looked for type and presses on ebay, and on the Trading Post (online), but have had no luck. I hate being stuck out in Australia where you can't buy anything obscure like small button makers or letterpresses. Or if you can, no one has a website for it. Want to live in England. *sulks*

I know there's a letterpress mailing list, but I think it's one of those old-fashioned ones that I don't understand because I was only about 12 or 13 when they were really in vogue and my dad never explained them to me. And the only time I think about them are at 4am when he's asleep. I wanted to join alt.fan.pratchett, but same deal. No one makes FAQs about this sort of thing. I DON'T UNDERSTAND MAILING LISTS THAT AREN'T ON YAHOO! I feel like such a luddite.

My new knowledge of the small printing press et al is also partly the cause of the ridiculous-staying-uppage of last night, if I remember correctly. I have watched about four episodes of Buffy today, hence the "ridiculous-staying-uppage of last night" as part of the entry.

I keep planning on making my own paper, too, but that involves lots of forethought. Like preparing the paper mixture. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow after getting back from everything I have to do.

I really get quite lost when I can't find a FAQ on something via google, or via a community on Livejournal. I guess I use the internet rather the way Verence (Lords and Ladies et al, Pratchett) or Hermione (Harry Potter. If you really needed that explained...) use books. I used the internet to learn how to cast on (the actual knitting I was taught many years ago) as I explained to my sister when she asked how I magically became a guru at knitting.

If I magically had a printing press tomorrow, I would publish a collection of horror/dark fantasy stories. 'Course, I'd have to finish them first... but I have some done. I am quite proud of this fact. I have three done, I realise not two (as I check my memories). Two of which are reasonably long! Yes, I'd need many more to finish the book. Don't burst my bubble. This is a book I'm printing on my fictional printing press, remember? Oh to be in England in the first half of the twentieth century, when you could just set up a publishing company like that in your garden shed. Damn you, Virginia Woolf!

I knitted approximately two stripes on the scarf today. I'm quite proud of this fact, especially since I'm starting to get RSI. I have now completed nine and a half stripes. Unfortunately, I was misled by my approximate (very approximate) following of a knitting pattern to believe that I'd only need about ten or eleven stripes, thirteen at the outside. Trying the scarf on (as I knit it), I have come to the conclusion that about eighteen or nineteen (v. important to have an odd number, due to the colouring of the stripes) would be more suitable. My wrists and patience would like to say OW.

Oh! In random searching for my copy of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, I came across the book in which I made the initial comments/planning about my 2001 NaNo novel. It's interesting to note what has/hasn't changed since then. Two of the original major plot points were based on dreams I had (Damn but I love my dreams when they provide me with material), and could remember reasonably vividly upon reading the brief notes in the book. Both those plot points have morphed far beyond their original reckoning. It was fascinating. I think I could probably use those dreams for something else now, I guess.

Phm. I'm sure I had more to write, but I've lost my train of thought. Well done if you read all the way through. Have some virtual cookies. I bet that most or none of you will... not being accusatory, just slightly pessimistic/realistic. I think that if you have something emotionally sensitive to say, you should just say it at the end of a very long post. That way it won't be read.

hey! do you want to know how to join, or do you want to know their rules? I can possibly tell you how to join, depending on what email program you use...

oh, and making your own books sounds lovely. There is a store in Castlemaine that sells old block type of 1960s advertisements, which is just a random connection to all that stuff. I'm seriously thinking of starting a small press out here (in the sense of publishing, not making books). Printing is the main industry of the town I live near and I figure all I really need is a name and a manuscript. Right?

Well, how to join, I guess. The rules are available on the FAQ on L-space web, I'm pretty sure.

Heh, I'll just have to move to where you are. We could be business partners. [/fancy]

*sigh*

Okay, I use outlook express, but it is probably similar for other mail programs. Find the newsgroup section - in outlook you go to tools then accounts then click on the news tab. click on 'new' to make a newsgroup a/c. Then just follow the wizard. Your isp webpage should have info about the news server. Once it is set up, you go to the news folder and view all the available newsgroups (as far as i understand it, every newsgroup will be listed) and pick the ones you want to look at. When you have found the one(s) you want you 'subscribe' - you have to do this one at a time. Your mail program may ask you this automatically. It can take a minute for all messages to hit your screen. Then, after you subscribe whenever you want to see the newsgroup you click on the newgroup folder and then the one you want to look at. I'm not sure I've explained this very well (it has been awhile since I have used them) but hopefully it is enough to get you started. Email me if you have any other questions.

Oh, and you don't have to move - this is the technological age! Is there something you are interested in being part of, coz I need all the motivation I can get...

Thanks... I'll try and muddle along best I can... try and apply this to Eudora when I'm awake. :D (Damn me for the change from outlook to eudora mere months ago!)

Well, what sort of thing did you have in mind?

how's the newsgroup thing going?

re the publishing thing...I have no idea. What needs to be done? I dunno. I haven't really had the time to sit down and think about it properly (obviously!) - hopefully I'll get to do that over easter so shall I just keep you in mind? Let you know when I think of something? See what you think then?

Oh, I'm so totally lost. I need to ask someone who's either here (my Dad) or familiar with Eudora, I think. Thanks for the help, though. *smile*

Absolutely definitely. Keep me up to speed. I Want To Know! ;P

*virtual cookie for me* I generally always read your posts! Unless of course it's one of the times i jump on, realise how many posts I need to catch up on and then disconnect!

I'd love to make my own books....with the funky old style covering and shit! I'd ideally like to make my own leather coverings for the books...but that'd be expensive and time consuming! Then also I'd have to choose which bloody story or compilation to put inside the book!

Oh and hey.....how are you going with your folks these days?

I avoid my parents as much as possible...

Well, the alternative is book covering material that I've seen people use. Slightly cheaper.

That's my point; people don't always have the time/patience/whatever to read long-arse posts.

strange western music?

That music at the end of the movie of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead is acutally, um... Pink Floyd.

"I was in the kitchen, Seamus, that's the dog, was outside..."

I'll just go lie back down...

Nonono, the stuff when they're being hung. The westerny music that echoes the strange western music at the start when they're riding their horses.

If you hear what sounds like a dog howling, then that's "seamus". It's the instrumental part after "My old hound dog lied right down and cried."
