A few weeks ago, I went on Adventure to find as many (public) images of the Gods in Melbourne as I could. I knew there were a few around. I was also planning on going to the National Gallery, but it is closed on Tuesdays. Very annoying.

Bust of Herakles in the Queen Victoria Gardens

This one nearly made me cry. I don't think he was so mutilated last time I paid a visit.
Bust of Apollon of Belvedere in the Queen Victoria Gardens

Here you can see the positioning of the two busts. It always looked to me like Apollon was checking out Herakles, while the hero looked away blushingly.

Statue of Artemis outside the Conservatory in the Fitzroy Gardens – actual title "Diana and the Hounds". I'm afraid I didn't note down the artist's name.
Edit: The artist is William Leslie Bowles.

Another angle, because I find this a beautiful and inspiring statue.

About ten minutes elapsed until I could take this second picture. People kept standing in shot, very provokingly. They looked at me, and kept on standing there, eating their icecreams or whatever. And as soon as one moved, someone else would take their place. ARGH! I thought there were Rules about this sort of thing.

Not a god, but arguably a sort of satyr or something. This statue is inside the Conservatory, which is filled from floor to ceiling with leafy bliss. It makes me deeply happy.

Lucky. I'm still on a plain ole 4-megapixel digital camera. I've wanted a digital SLR for ages, but Steph (who both has more money and takes more photos than I do) will probably get one first. If I'm lucky, she'll let me borrow it occasionally. :)

that would be cool. melbourne has awesome artworks in and around the city. i wish i could go out and have the dearth of subject matter you have. and classical subject matter to boot! sigh.

Yep. There's some appalling art, too, but you have to take the good with the bad.

(Erm, dearth means lack or scarcity. Do you mean abundance?)

I love it, great idea! There are no such statues in my smallish town, but there ought to be! Then again, maybe if I look hard enough I'd find some. Might be worth checking . . .

Still, you've got some good ones there!

Thank you. I have a feeling there's another one or two hidden at the University of Melbourne (besides the replica Zeus/Poseidon in the former classics building), but they might just be statues of no significance.

Those are great, and what a neat idea! Would you mind if I listed those on our Holy Places Everywhere page on Neokoroi?
