Home from trip to mountains. Hab a horrible, horrible code. ON MY DAY OFF, I might point out, which is not remotely fair. Woke up at about five this morning with it after feeling a bit off-colour last night. My sinuses are filled with sulphur*, and my throat is coated in pitch. AND I'M ON MY LAST HANKIE. The world knows not my misery.

I did read Kipling's Song to Mithras, though. That helped cheer me.

* No matter what my chemistry teacher says, I still believe it's spelt sulphur. He never did break me of the habit, nor induce me to even feign the 'f' spelling in tests or assignments.

I miss you. *sniffle*

I'm feeling all weak and not-quite-up-to-ambulating, so I think this is what'sherface's virus, and not just a cold. :(

And I'm really, really HUNGRY. Like, all the time. I had my lunch at 10, and might have yesterday's lunch a bit later. Then maybe some more miso. Hungry.

Stay well fed, my darling.

There's that black-bean stew from last week that still needs eating, too!

Now you have me wondering. I always thought it was 'sulphur' too.

AHA. Dictionary.com says that it's a variant of 'sulfur.' So it's not wrong at all.

'Sulphur' would be the original English spelling. 'Sulfur' would be the American 'simplified' spelling. Based on the fact that I was politely berated for spelling it with the ph, it would seem that the scientific community has accepted the American spelling as standard.

Silly scientific community. It's not like they need official standards for everything in the entire world. Surely they could let a little thing like spelling slide.

I am being told loudly and most sternly by Nyte that letting something slide just this once is a bad precedent, blah blah blah. He's one of those science-y people, so. Y'know.

My complaint, of course (not being American), is "Well, yes, I can understand that; but why does the standard always have to be American?"

It's because I'm jealous of your country, and the fact that Britain doesn't really have an empire anymore, you see. ;)

Probably because it didn't occur to anyone but an American that having more than one spelling would really be a problem. But you know some anal-retentive soul out there wanted to MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE WE ALL KNOW FOR CERTAIN, double-stampies and no take-backs plus infinity.

According to Eddie Izzard, you're jealous because we have the American Dream. Where we get all the money in the world and stick it in our ears and go, "THBBBBBBBPT!" Which is a pretty good dream.

... Okay. That just killed me DED.

I think the Australian Dream just includes a meat pie, a stubbie, and a long day doing not much and watching the footy or cricket.
