Prayer to Zeus
Jun. 15th, 2007 08:18 pmI like this one, because I've managed to sneak a sort-of pun in there. I referred to Melbourne as the "city of storms". This is a reference to the fact that everyone claims that Melbourne's weather is so bad (which is bollocks. I LOVE rain and I can tell you we don't get that much. And as I recall, Sydney has a higher rate than we do), and the fact that our Rugby ... (er, Union? No wait, League) team is called Melbourne Storm.
AHAHAH I KEEL ME.
Anyway, this is a prayer for rain, which Australia always needs more of. I should probably write a prayer of thankfulness to accompany it.
Zeus, Thunderer, Cloud-gatherer, Rain-bringer!
Your supplicant calls to you from the city of storms!
Your children cry out to you.
For too long have we missed the touch of your rain
Your clouds have been silent and dry-eyed against our plight.
Throughout our country, animals have been slaughtered;
Not for the gods, as is proper, or even to feed the people,
But rather for the ravenous maw of drought, who is no friend of man.
Gather your storm clouds, Thunderer, that the people might look up
And their mouths fill with songs of praise for your power and majesty.

Date: 2007-06-15 08:57 pm (UTC)Long before I even knew about the Greek gods, let alone Zeus, I was always strongly drawn to thunderstorms: the rush of power, the electricity in the air, the way that they washed everything away and left the world pure and new and vibrant with life. Truly a magical experience.
May I add this to the site? And if so, how shall I credit you? I've been using delirieuse but I don't know if that's how you really want to go by.
