changelingAs I've been working on this puberty book, I've been thinking about slang terms for genitalia. Based on people I've met and the fan fiction I read, most people use them over the "real" names. Some slang terms are insulting, some are funny or ludicrous (and probably help reduce the fear response). Some are highly individualised. We probably have favourites and those we wish would never be spoken again by a human mouth (the term "pinny" for vagina is certainly up there on my latter list at the moment).
So I thought I'd post a poll so that people can share their best and worst nicknames, for either or both sexes of genetalia (What a wonderful word. Sounds almost ... governmental. "The ground-breaking Genetalia Report, from the Minister of Things We Do In Bed, suggests that we ought to all be getting a bit more exercise.") I'm happy to get things going. My favourite slang term is "quim", for the lady-parts among us. I love it. It has an air of Jane Austen pornography about it. In fact, when I looked it up in various online dictionaries (as well as my own mammoth Macquarie), they suggest it hails from either the 15th or 16th centuries, no-one was sure which (Oxford declined to give a date at all). One definition (now can't remember where) suggested it derived from a Scottish word meaning pleasure (which is a nice thought), while my favourite online British dictionary of slang suggested a likely derivation: from the Welsh cwm, meaning valley. (Cwm, by the way, is pronounced so the w is a very shortened u, almost a schwa.) This would partner it with the mons, I suppose, which is Latin for "mountain". Ah, geography. Who ever thought you were boring?
