changelingI'm going to spend the day at Steph's today. It's not because it's hot and Daharja's has no air-conditioning, though that's rapidly becoming a reason. It's because I'm arachnophobic.
Mostly it's under control. A few days ago I went to hang out a wash on the clothes line, and found that there was no peg bag because all the pegs were kept on the line, and were covered in spider webs. I started to hang things up regardless, and found a small spider nestling in one of the grooves. I freaked a bit, and went out and bought new pegs.
Just now I went out to bring in the clothes, so I could hang out the towel wash that finished. First I found that there was a thin spider web connecting the clothes line to the pocket of a pair of my shorts. I was a bit worried, but took it inside anyway. Then, when I came back out, I discovered a great big nasty-looking spider sitting on my bra. I freaked out and went inside to call Steph. She reminded me to "beat" the clothing I'd brought in, so I put on a pair of her shoes and trod on it, my mother's treatment for all gardening gloves and suchlike that are kept outside. I squished a small spider who had hoped to make my shorts its home. I went back outside, armed with a spray bottle of environmentally-friendly shower cleaner, and discovered the spider, folded up in a crevice of the bra. I sprayed it with the cleaner, and it leapt down the bra. I can usually deal reasonably well with spiders, but jumping spiders I'm completely phobic about. I may have given a womanly scream and gone inside to settle my nerves. The washing can stay there. I just wish I had my dad around to take it in for me.
