"Fanny" does not connotate your arse to Brits and Australians. It means a girl's *cough* private parts. Ergo, the concept of a "fanny pack" almost has me fall off my chair laughing.

We here call it a "bum bag".

Oooh, on this TV show called "If I Ruled The World", one of the politicos was asked what a "Fanny pack" was, and he responded, "Isn't that a colourful euphamism for the Spice Girls?"

They're like the Brat Pack! Only not!

And some people are named this. Poor people.

The phrase "pat on the fanny" becomes ever more amusing.

There was a band in the 70's (I think 70's) called Fanny. The american members of the band had nooooo idea till they toured in Ireland :P

I heard that the band name was engineered by one of the members, or perhaps a member's friend, who knew perfectly well what the slang entailed overseas ...

Yeah, the one member of the band who wasn't american knew full well what it meant. She didn't set out to name it that, but when the opportunity arose, she took it!

Wonderful! Though, I did go to look at your userinfo, and have been discovering many fun communities. I...enid blyton slah! I had no idea such a thing existed! I should have strolled through your userinfo years ago, what fun it is.

Yeah, I found some of my communities the same way, trolling through other people's userinfos for interesting communities. I really like well-done userinfos. They're one of the best things about Livejournal, I think.

The Enid Blyton slash comm is a bit dead in the water. We ought to revive it. *adds to long list of stuff to write*

Yeah, like the voting story (I actually wrote but chickened out of posting) and the Debord / Lefebvre slash. One day, it will all get posted.

There was a community about tweed and dapper english men! Do you think there is a community for historical figure slash somewhere out there?

[livejournal.com profile] tweedlove, from memory. Yeah, that was started by [livejournal.com profile] villainny. BTW, have you checked out Dinghies?

*A* community for historical figure slash? Honey, I bet I could find you half a dozen in the next half hour if I weren't watching Lost.

Sweet joy!

I hear you are a million episodes in front of the rest of us when it comes to Lost. I will try to hide my great and terrible envy in a gentlemanly fashion and walk away whislting.

*pheeeeeeeeephhhhheeeeeeee*

(wellllll, how would you write out the sound of a whistle? )

I might post it. If I ever find it again.

Eeee! That sounds lovely. Miss [livejournal.com profile] notfudge showed me train prices, and they were only $60!!!!!! That is the price of two CDs!!! Of one and a half hardbook cover books!!!!

And of course I would go by train, because I love them so. Though where this would leave me and my original 'I will keep Livejournal and real life separate' intentions all those years ago, I don't know. Do people in your real life, apart from people who themselves own journals, know you have an LJ?

What cracks me up about that is anybody who makes that mistake actually, I think, deserves it, because only certain type of people find fanny packs/bum bags to be conversational topics in the first place, and never have I properly identified with any of them.

And fanny packs/bum bags are just a fashion no-no.

It's more the people who say things like "Park your fanny there" or similar. Until I worked out what the Americans meant, it seemed a little ... personal.

Date: 2005-02-12 06:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] doubtful-salmon.livejournal.com
You know, perhaps they really meant that. I oftentimes tell people to park their vaginas in a particular place. Is it not a common practice?

I can't guarantee this for Brits. This is Aussie slang. Quite likely it still goes for Brits, though.

The slightly daffy old lady teaching one of my classes when I lived in London insisted on me explaining this during a discussion of slang with some very amused British girls. It didn't help that I'd just learned what a 'slag tag' was... "You've got one on your neck, like."

ext_12944: (thoughtful)
From: [identity profile] delirieuse.livejournal.com
So what's a slag tag? The only slang definitions I know for "slag" are 1) a loose woman, or 2) spit (as in saliva. Either the noun or verb. Suspect this is specifically a Victorian thing). *is all curious now*

It's what's commonly called a 'love bite'. Here we call them 'hickeys' for some reason.

Date: 2005-02-12 05:37 pm (UTC)
ext_12944: (thoughtful)
From: [identity profile] delirieuse.livejournal.com
Generally called "hickeys" over here, too. Australian lexicon & slang borrows heavily from the British, with a dash of American & some uniquely Australian words & phrases added for good measure (e.g., "Back of Bourke" = in the middle of nowhere).

Date: 2005-02-12 04:52 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] darketherdream.livejournal.com

Neck, huh? You mean, what someone might call a love bite, might be called a 'slag tag' elsewhere? I can't think what else it could mean.

ext_27770: (Default)

You're correct. I don't know if it's a region specific thing, but the people who used it were all from southeastern England.
