There are no WORDS for how much I covet. [livejournal.com profile] mawaridi, when I'm rich, can I engage your services in creating a replica? I am so enamoured.

Of late, I have not been (as no doubt some of you may have noticed) online infrequently. This is largely due to my dalliance with S, as we have been spending days at a time at each other's houses, and it would be rude for me to ignore her and get online here, and it would be presumptuous to demand the use of her internet there. So I have been neglecting my online friends rather dreadfully. I therefore have quite a lot to say, and am pondering the method of communication. Do I spend three hours and post one enormous entry, possibly behind LJ cuts, or do I split it up, as would be easier to write, but much harder to finish, and have everyone thoroughly sick of my posts filling their friends' page? It is a dilemma indeed.

Yestere'en, Steph and I ventured in the city, so that she could make her way home (my car being defunct, and also my budget straining a little at the frequent trips between our houses). We stopped by Oxfam, where I picked up two Indonesian fans. I am thinking of attempting to take one apart in order to fit the fan fabric to my birthday outfit. Later we stopped by Lincraft, a fabric store. It is going into receivership and so has discounted its fabric by fifty per cent. I was able to get some periwinkle linen-cotton weave for only four dollars per metre. I bought eight metres of it, so I have more than enough to make another overskirt and jacket if I so wish. I also picked up about four metres (if I recollect) of a blue cotton with a white flower pattern on it. I liked it at the time, and it has only grown on my since. I may make a polonaise with it, as suggested by Steph's emailed link:
'This consisted of a floral cotton polonaise over a plain, brightly coloured skirt of walking length, and worn with a straw hat, perched forward on the high coiffure. It was a charming, girlish, eighteenth century style costume, beloved of ordinary Englishwomen, and not of
Society ladies.'

If I do, it may be wise to go back to Lincraft at some stage this week or the next to buy more cotton lace (what is the official term for that stuff? It's like a thin strip of cotton with embroidery and cutouts on it) to use as edging. I bought two metres apiece of three types, but I do not think that will be enough to edge an entire polonaise.
Afterwards we picked up some Kentucky Fried Chicken due to our fiscal shortcomings (always a mistake. I was in intestinal agony when I woke up this morning. This must be the third or fourth time that it has made me ill. No more. I will never purchase it again. I'd rather buy McDonalds - it may taste hideous, but at least I won't be ill) and went to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, which is finally showing in Australian cinemas. It was well made, but it was far too short, and left me with the unsettled feeling of having just paid movie price to watch a pilot episode for a series that will never be filmed. It was also beautiful in its composition and art, but on the other side, there was far too little of Angelina Jolie's character. The Age reviewer noted that she seemed to be channelling David Niven. This amused me immensely, though I daresay I am the only one reading this journal who knows who that is.

Today I booked my car in for a service, after dragging my feet for a month or more. I was spurred on by my car's deciding to quit on my yesterday, leading to a $10.30 cab fare and interminable wait for a bus afterwards. It is booked for Monday morning at 10 am. My father has told me that I must tell them to call me if something beyond mere servicing needs doing, as unscrupulous mechanics can take advantage of those young and female.

I found glacier mints today. They claim to be "Fox's Crystal Clear mints", but Fox's cannot deceive me with a packaging and name change. It may not have the blue cellophane with the polar bear, but they are glacier mints. I am so pleased. I fell in love with them whilst in England. I had my first glacier mint while watching the Welsh National Opera (well, I recall they were Welsh, I don't recall the name of the opera company. I'm making an educated guess) sing The Magic Flute. Part of my love may have to do with the pronunciation, as my English choir mistress pronounced them as 'glæsiə mints, as opposed to the standard Australian pronunciation of 'gleɪsiə (International Phonetic Alphabet explained, and directions for input into webpages here). I still pronounce them as glæsiə mints, although I use the Australian pronunciation for the large slabs of ice.
In any case, I found them, and they came in a nifty little tin with a plastic resealable lid. I may have to go back and get more at some later date.

Apparently there are those purchasing me gifts for my birthday (February 27th) who do not know what to get me. For my birthday I should like: books and music. I had a list of the books I want, and S has done odd things with it since tidying my room for it. So I cannot give you my old list. If you wish it, you need merely to return to the post I made sometime last December with my requests for Christmas. My sister has purchased me one of the graphic amusements - I believe it was Ellis' Transmetropolitan: "The Cure", though it may have been a Lucifer.
So, instead, I shall request books I would not necessarily purchase myself. I wish to read any Peter Whimsy series by Dorothy Sayers. Any Wodehouse that is not Jeeves, or (alternatively) if you can get ahold of the Hutchison Jeeves Omnibuses, I have the first two and would welcome any of the later collections. I would (very much) like a subscription* to the Stanley Howler Stamp Journal. And a book I have little doubt I will not purchase under my own power, and which I didn't know existed an hour ago: The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary, by Simon Winchester.
In terms of music, I should very much like to get my hands on any Rasputina, Dresden Dolls, or the recent Dallas Crane album. Also, any Voltaire that is not Almost Human or Devil's Bris. And if anyone finds the Emerson, Lake and Palmer album Pictures at an Exhibition (if I recall the title correctly), that would be good, too.
I should also like the following patterns from Truly Victorian, for those feeling rich or American (they have a Different Economy over there, as Steph keeps reminding me): the 1873 Polonaise (TV410), the Victorian Petticoats (TV170), and the Victorian Underwear (LM100). I believe their average price is about US$18, plus postage.
Hmm. Moroccan tea glasses would still be nice. As would a parasol, as I have not found one yet, in all my wanderings through the city. Note this is one I want to use, not just display.
I should also like paid LJ time, as it seems I may not be getting my customary year from my parents this birthday, as Father is interested in upgrading my computer, instead.
Actually, I'd also like Burt's Bees lipbalm, as Steph has introduced me to it and it is divine. Both this and the Bath and Body lipbalm (I have some sort of berry flavour - Kara has promised me melon, one of my favourite flavours, but has thus far failed to follow through) are delicious, and utterly unavailable in Australia. I think it cruel that they will not ship internationally.

* You have no idea how long it took me to remember that word. All I could think of was "prescription".

I have work tomorrow evening, and I have yet to compose the invitation entry and/or email for my birthday, so I had better leave this here for the time being.

I remain, yours &c.

Hello, hello! I have been greedy for your updates, and here is one now. What is this? You've been to England?! I did not know that! Nor did I know that your birthday was on the 27th. All this information! It is all too much!

Now, you must tell me who David Niven is, not because I don't trust google to do the same equally well, but because I like conversation. Yay, conversation.

Hee! If I'd been known I was so missed, I might have made a better effort.

I have indeed; for a choir tour in 1999. It was most excellent. I was there for a month - a time far too brief for my liking.

Yes, I am a Pisces. Were you in Melbourne, I would suggest that you must come on my birthday trip on Puffing Billy.

David Niven was an English actor. He was in the Pink Panther movies, but I remember him best from Death on the Nile, which had a fantastic performance by Mia Farrow, and also starred Maggie Smith and Angela Lansbury.

*curls* I like conversation.

His face is so familiar! Possibly a childhood Pink Panther flashback.

You were in a choir! I did not know that! (I was in a choir once. I left before all those nice promised overseas tours happened).

Oh, Puffing Billy does sound pleasant.

Possibly. He was in StuffTM.

I was! I've been in a few, actually, either directly or indirectly through school, so haven't done any choir work since. I miss it. I may look into the RMIT choir this year.

It will be, I hope. Wish you could be there. You'll just have to visit us at some stage during the year & we will take you along!

I think sometimes I'd like to do choir work, my voice has completely faded away since I stopped in school.
I desperately want to go to see you both in Melbourne, if I do I think I will have to plan it sometime after may, the official month of Stuff Happening.

I daresay I am the only one reading this journal who knows who that is.
I know who he is (although I will admit to googling to check if I was right. I was.)
I think that might have just persuaded me to see the film (before it disappears).

I love David Niven. He rocks. I can't say I exactly thought of him while Jolie was onscreen, but it's an amusing comparison. It's not a bad film, providing you don't have high expectations of it and just enjoy it for teh pretty.

(Love the icon.)

I think the pretty would compensate for a lot in this film, I liked the trailer.

I think I might have stolen that text from somewhere, I'm not sure.

I've missed seeing your posts!

The thing about wishlists like this - things don't get marked off so others don't buy them :(

Also, crap - left my address book at home, so no ordering things for you... or, I could just send it to me and bring it tooo you.

I've missed making them! :)

Well, no. Unless one person takes over as Wishlist Organiser, I suppose.

I can email it to you, if you'd like, or you can bring it over. Whichever you'd like. :D

You coming to Puffing Billy?

Definitely coming to Puffing Billy :D I figure I'll either give you your present then, or bring it over after if it comes too late.

And I just realised, if someone else does buy you the present i got you, I have someone who would really love it as well, so I can get you something that you don't already have.
