In looking back to antiquity for inspiration, The Pre-Raphaelites created seductive images of women with long, flowing hair wearing loose, draped garments. Certain themes repeat: enchantment, sleep, waiting, loneliness, losing and finding, clinging together, and nature. There is melancholy in these paintings that haunts the viewer and renders the images unforgettable.
