I love the Victorians.

I have a bad habit of stealing my sisters' books (usually Nyssa's, although recently stealing Kara's introduced me to both Harry Potter and Series of Unfortunate Events), usually while they're halfway (or less) through. These holidays I borrowed The Ruby in the Smoke, by Philip Pullman. I found it much better reading than I was expecting, and far less condescending. It (and its subsequent sequel The Shadow in the North, if I remember the title correctly) was exquisitely Victorian, and reminded me of Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series. There was a hint of Mina in the heroine, Sally.

Unfortunately, I have no one to discuss the ending to the second book with as Kara is only halfway through, and I don't want to spoil it for her, dammit. The books are part of a trilogy, but we unfortunately don't own the third book. Kara will borrow his other trilogy off her friend, though, so I'll get to read that. I hope it's as good.

Zan drew this beautiful picture which I have coloured, thusly:

I like the way it's turned out, especially the hair on the lefthand figure. The dresses ended up being vastly different colours to the way I had initially envisioned, but I think they work. The girl on the left has ivory buttons.

This picture...

... was the picture I drew for Zan for Christmas. It's Lucifer, pre-Fall. Lucifer Light-Bringer...
Not quite as pretty as Zan's stuff, but I was quite pleased with it at the time. I'd originally intended to draw it on good quality paper and turn it into a card, or maybe just a picture, and then colour it, maybe in watercolours. I'd not got around to it, in the end, which is a pity.
You can't quite see the detail of the picture quite as well in this one. It's been shrunk from the original scanned art, and the eyes have gone wonky.

I got Glacier Mints in Merimbula; I haven't been able to get them since my brief trip to England. I didn't even know you could get them in Australia. I doubt I'll be able to find them again easily, so I'll just have to savour the ones I have.

Speaking of Philip Pullman, have you read his "His Dark Materials" trilogy (ie. The Northern Lights/The Subtle Knife/The Amber Spyglass)? I heartily recommend them! They're brilliant.

That's exactly the other trilogy my sister is borrowing for me.

Ooooh, pretty, pretty pictures!

Hmm, Fox's Glacier mints. I have strange memories of eating them near where two horses were kept. How odd, that that is the first thing that springs to mind.

I've read the Ruby in the Smoke trilogy, but it's been awhile. Or maybe I've just read the first two. I can't remember. I quite liked His Dark Materials, but I absolutely loathed the main character--everyone acted like she was the Second Coming or something and it didn't make any SENSE. She was a dreadful twat. I'd have smacked her.

I got obsessed with them when I was there. I bought a big packet at a car boot sale in Wales. I should have remembered and got you to bring some back for me, dammit. ^^

I wouldn't be surprised if I had the same reaction to her... should find out tonight, with any luck.

I love the Ruby in the Smoke...er...first two books.

I did get it. *grins & hugs*

Honey, you don't have to beg. I'd love to.

And I am interested in the comic based on the Victorians...there's a shock. *grins*

Yeah, now that you mention it, she was kinda annoying. But hey, that's twelve year old children for you! :-P

And without spoiling the ending for Dani (cos that'd be bad) although she *is* important, I couldn't help but think at the end, "That's it? That's the "role" that she plays?".

Lord Asriel, on the other hand, is a great character. :)
