About the upcoming (Australian) election:*
Me: I just think that people should have to sit a test to prove they paid attention. Just a five question multiple choice, and you have to get at least three right or your vote is discounted. No vote for you!
Nys: Like who're the leaders of the two major parties.
Dad: What are their favourite colours.
Nys: Blue. No! It's greeeeen!

*For those not in the know, Australia has compulsory voting, which means everyone has a vote, and has to vote. Unfortunately, this includes Liberals**.
**And just to confuse you further, the Liberal Party is the conservative party.

Excellent plan. However, Australia has compulsory voting, which means everyone has a vote, and has to vote. Unfortunately, this includes Liberals = not entirely accurate. It's compulsory to show up at the voting station and get your name ticked off, and it's compulsory to receive the voting papers, but it's not actually compulsory to vote. What you then do with the papers is up to you. You can vote, or you can throw in blank papers.

Sadly, you're completely right about the Liberals, though.

That's because you can't enforce that people cast valid votes without removing the anonymity of it. But yes, what I said wasn't totally accurate because I was being simplistic.

That sounds very much like cheating to me. They should have people who have to give up their identities, somewhat like entering the French Foreign Legion, whose job it is to watch that people vote.
Then they would have daily lie detector tests to prove that they had not revealed anything that they had seen. Their entire lives would be lived in deep secrecy, and no one would ever know who they were, though they would have common jobs as bakers and checkout chicks and sheep farmers, except for every four years, when their usually normal lives take on an electoral oddity.

Yes. I am full of such practical ideas, it will surprise you to hear.

Do you remember a few years ago people were getting into trouble for telling other people how to do non-prefferencial voting? It doesn't work any more but you used to be able to put 1 for your first preffrence and 2 for the rest of the ballot. Whiping all the other parties out of your vote.

I always vote Green/Democrat.
*Don't even think it*

YAY! Free drugs for everyone!

Didn't somebody actually get arrested for that? And Australia put on some list of countries that don't have free elections? Or something?
Bah. So much for democracy, eh?

...And damn, I'm so ashamed that I didn't think it until you put it like that. OTP!!1!.. *hides*

Huh. Nah, never heard about it. How peculiar.

I vote Greens, Democrats, Labor, Liberal. It doesn't matter in my area, because it's a safe Labor seat (which I'd rather than a safe Lib one), and the bloke is v. decent.

That's quite amusing, in a not-very-amusing-at-all kinda way.

(I SO want someone to write Greens/Democrats slash. Dare ya!)

Heh. I'm always doing that. Everybody seems to think it's deliberate, though. Wonder why that is... *g*

You could always cross out the candidates and write "NONE OF THE ABOVE" below.

Although I'd advise against it as we need every vote against Howard we can muster.
