Saw Garfield today. I'm a Garfield fan from way back (remember when Odie wasn't Jon's? Remember Jon's friend with the funny moustache? Yeah.), and I had kinda liked the trailer, so although I was prepared for disappointment, I wasn't quite prepared for the amount of suck Garfield contained. Jon was an imbecile, the plot was crap, the whole film was unfunny and the dialogue (mostly Garfield's, since he had most of the dialogue) was also crap.

SAMPLE ONLY:
Garfield: Look at me! I'm fat! I'm lazy! I'm fat and lazy! I like lasagne!
Everyone around him: Look at Garfield, he's so fat! Hahaha!

Anyway. Made dinner today. Made a crockpot soup that needed to be cooked for about 5 hours. Things I learnt: bacon cooked for 5 hours doesn't taste anything like the bacon I'm used to. And I don't like it. Next time I try ham hocks like one of the recipes suggested. Whatever ham hocks are.

Read on a website that I'm somewhat overweight. My BMI is apparently 27, when the healthy range is 20-25. I am so unfit. Also discovered that I am 5'2".

On a side note, when will you Americans switch to metric? It's really pissy having to convert things to the old measurements all the time. And don't try and pretend your way is superior. We don't have a base 12 number system. We have a base 10 number system. Imperial is lame. Also, you don't sound anywhere near as fat in metric. 66kg = 145lbs. See? Convert to metric and already you'll feel thinner!

In more positive news, I may not have Design & Layout tomorrow. In which case, I am planning on going swimming, as I won't know until I get there whether the class is on or not. I may go swimming regardless.

You should be able to get ham hocks from a supermarket deli, I know they have them in the deli here. They're like, the end bit of a leg of ham or something, they've been smoked [I think] and add great flavour to soups and stew because of the bone.

And, for what it's worth, BMI scales are based on mathematical averages, as opposed to real human beings. A bodybuilder's BMI is just as high as mine is, so it's not a real indication of health or fitness.

P.S. We're the same height!

I figured they'd be something like that. Thanks!

Oh, I know that BMIs should be taken with a grain of salt. But on the other hand, I'm 66kg, and I used to be 58 when I was dancing and swimming a lot. I've been very sedentary lately, and I'm basically trying to get more exercise and cut some of the shit out of my diet.

Woo! I'm prolly a hair shorter... I think I'm 157cm, and I rounded up slightly to get to 5'2". ;)

66kg is not heavy. I'm 105kgs or so. Don't stress, but if you wanna get out and get more active, well, just go and do it and enjoy it.

And, well, actually, to be a tad more accurate [boo Imperial], I'm about 157cm as well. I haven't measured my height for ages, because I've been this height since I was 12 - or so I thought. I was 155 cm tall at the end of year 12, and 155 cm tall when I was 12, and 155 cm tall a few years ago. Either I've measured myself wrong somewhere along the way, or I've grown 2 cm in the last couple of years. Woo!

Not that heavy, I know, but I'm an ex-ballet girl. As I've said before, nothing breeds eating disorders like ballet. Especially when you have a 6' something girl who wears size six complaining about how fat she is. And I miss being active, and having a dancer's physique, even if it was an amateur dancer's physique, and I've always been curvy. But, y'know, I used to be an 8-10, and now I'm a 12-16. Plus my mother and sister are about a size 10. And I'm sick of not being able to find trousers that fit.

That's so awesome. Can't believe we're the same height!

Ballet and gymnastics. Very harsh hobbies/sports/whatever to be involved in if you don't already fit the mold.

Nevermind the dress sizes. They mean nothing! I have clothes in my wardrobe in sizes from 14-24 and they all fit me as I am now. It's not like I morph into a fat girl when I wear size 24 stuff or suddenly drop 20 kgs when I'm wearing a size 14 t-shirt.

I will say, though, that if you've gained weight, you're probably "unhealthy" - I'm like the most "unhealthy" person I know, so I'm not having a go at you. I really want to be fit and muscly and be able to run around all over the place... it's not about sizes or appearance or social expectations for me, just wanting to be able to run and jump and be active and not have to lug this extra weight around.

I seem to know a lot of short[er] people. D's mum is like 4'10" and getting smaller every year... I don't care. Gimme my insane shoes and I'm almost average height.

*nods* I know.

Hee! They may mean nothing, but I miss my old pair of black flares. No, really, they were awesome.

Weeeell... I *suspect* I'm unhealthy. But it's hard to tell how unhealthy, as I take after mum's side of the family and I'm still skinnier'n most of the women (Mum's still way skinnier'n me, though. Only skinny one of the girls out of all her sisters). When I was doing ballet, I was doing 4-5 hours of ballet and 1 1/2 hours of swimming. So that would have kept my weight down.

Here in Blighty we have theoretically changed to metric, but I still couldn't tell you how tall I am in centimetres. *guilt*

*giggles* That's okay. The difference is that you lot have tried. And your lot have a far longer-standing argument with the French (who invented the metric system) than the US do.

Damn right! I keep telling Americans this on Gaia and they just WON'T STOP IT. I'm like, dude, stop bitching about the French. We've had actual wars with the French. LOTS OF WARS. They invaded us! And we still like them enough to, you know, buy their booze and visit them. RARRRGH. Very annoyed by 13-year-olds from Kansas going on about how the French are "ungrateful". Learn your own history!

UNGRATEFUL? Fuck. Them.

They don't know the first fucking thing about ungrateful. The French bankrupted their own economy fighting in America's War of Independance. The French gave them Louisiana, as I recall.

(nono, I don't mind your spooge. Let me add to it. ;)

Exactly! And, let it be remembered, the French liberated Paris themselves. It said so on the BBC. If anyone wants to disagree with the BBC ... well. They're a fool.

*blinks* That's so odd. Is "Auntie Beeb" a common term for the BBC? Because we call the ABC (gov't funded but not run leftie awesome broadcasting thingie vaguely equiv. to the bbc) "Auntie", too.

Yeah, BBC's been known as "Auntie" for as long as I've been alive, if not longer. Hence the spoof of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E" being "The Man From Auntie".

1) The BMI scale is actually really funny. I know it's not applicable to athletes, but it's still amusing to get my BMI as 27.4.

2) I also wish the US would switch to Metric, but believe me, there's some STRONG opposition here. I like metric because it makes things mechanical easier to understand; when I was a greasemonkey, I loved changing oil on foreign cars as compared to domestic because I could reach for a 14mm wrench, and if that was too small, a 15mm or 16mm. Domestic autos, if the wrench I grabbed is too small -- say I grabbed a 1/2" -- I have to then look for a 17/32 or even 35/64" wrench. It's so hard to count in /64 fractions.

That is all.

I love the metric system! It's wonderful. And entirely practical.

I want to go swimming, so much, the sun is calling me outside, telling me to strip half-naked and so on. But I'm *ILL*. Cursed flu.

I know I'm apparently overweight, according to that table with the weights and the heights and such. I'm incredibly unfit, also. Wish it bothered me more than it does, I could maybe do something about it then.

Yeah, I used to swim in a squad every Saturday for an hour and a half when I was in school.

I started doing ballet, but I also did character, jazz and (in the final year) tap.

Date: 2004-08-28 02:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] darketherdream.livejournal.com

Oh, envy! I wanted to do tap, I was constantly begging my parents to let me do some sort of dance, but ah...no. They would have payed attention if I had begged to join a soccer team, I'm sure.

I am impressed, about the swimming in a squad. I've been swimming for years, and I'm sort of terrible at it.

It was bad. Bad, bad, bad. I'm just glad I watched a friend's burnt DVD rather than spend money on it.

I'm not so much a fan of Garfield any more. My tastes haven't changed; it's just that it's no longer funny. Davies should have wrapped it up years ago.

Metric is really hard for me. I don't know why. I guess because I had our way imprinted on me in my formative years. When I had to learn metric in high school, it was difficult and now I can't remember anything.
