(...I can't listen to him, either.)

I have a horrible feeling that this class is supposed to be "character building". We're learning Design and Layout in a computer room, but unlike Desktop Publishing (which I'm also taking), we're not using Quark Express. Or Pagemaker. Or InDesign.

We're doing it by hand.

Last week we had to work out the fit of a block of text. A simple enough prospect, given a ruler and a little calculation. Don (our teacher) had promised in the first week that we wouldn't need to supply this minor element of stationery; like the Lord God, he would provide.

Well, that was a lie.

Turned out there was only one person in the room with a ruler; one of those crappy little 15cm (around 6in) ones, and although she claimed to be free and easy with her possessions, this was not in fact the case. She grudgingly allowed me to use it for a scant minute or two before she called in the debt collectors.

Today, Don reached new levels of inscrutability, with constant references to lessons we hadn't had. I actually had to turn to Greg at one point and ask if I'd missed a class.

"Remember when we did letterpress?" he'd ask us, and there was blank incomprehension. "Now, who can guess how offset printing works based on that? The clue's in the name."

I can't say I've ever used the term "offset" in my everyday life, so that was no help. After a couple of vague mumblings from the class, Don provided the answer, since it was clear that we weren't going to. Later, he had a minor argument with us when he claimed that we had viewed a negative with a magnifying glass in week two. The rest of the class, strangely enough, disagreed. I wonder which year he thinks it is?

My theory is that he prepared this class at some stage in the 1970s, and has just given the same course year after year. This is why he thinks he's given us a class we've never had, as last week we weren't supposed to cover typography again. We're obviously one class behind.

Better go. Don's giving a riveting anecdote about a beltsander to someone on the other side of the class, and I don't want to miss it.
