Saw this image on my friends list, and it got me thinking about Gorey's work again. I only own one of his books (The Iron Tonic) but I very much admire his style, which really evokes a Victorian, engraved sort of look. I did a couple of drawings tonight in his style; one succeeds more than the other, I think, but they're both good drawings and I'm really happy with them. I pencilled and inked them whilst watching--listening, really--to the Two Towers Director/Writers commentary. I still have scanning and colouring to do, but I really enjoy colouring, so that's not really that much of a drama.

I'm quite fond of playing with drawing styles. I've done a few things now in the Medieval Illumination style. That's really quite distinctive, with the folds of clothing really delineated, and the large eyes and elongated hands and fingers. I've done a few things in what I think of as loosely Zan's style, where the proportions of the body are far more elongated than my style tends to be. And of course, playing with Jhonen Vasquez's style on Zim, which you can see examples of over in the wallpapers section of my website. Part of this does stem from the fact that I don't particularly like my style--the same way I don't like my name much, I suspect. It's too mundane and ordinary. But as soon as it takes on the attributes of someone else's style, it becomes fresh for me.

I should really probably have been working on Wackiness, but frankly Wackiness tends to become a chore at times, a Damoclean Sword that hangs over my head. I love the writing aspect, which is really very fast. If I don't need to edit the script, it only takes a couple of minutes to write. The pencilling, inking, scanning, colouring and layout takes up to seven or eight hours. Right now I have such a ridiculously busy schedule that it's really really hard to find an evening with enough uninterrupted hours to work on it. This is compacted by the fact that I am trying to get some semblance of fitness back into my life. Wednesday evening is for me my fitness time, whether it be cycling for an hour and then some yoga, or fencing. (Yay for fencing! I'll be going this week and seeing what it's like, and whether it's something I can do.) And I decided that I'm not allowed to feel guilty about the fact that I'm not working on Wackiness tonight. It's my night off from obligations, so neener. I bought a notepad that I'm keeping in my uni bag, though, so hopefully I'll get some of the preliminary pencil work done at uni in any case.

Would it be possible for you to give me pointers? I want to get my own comic started but Keenspace is so confusing :(
I promise my comic won't be up to par with yours, so don't feel threatened :P
