Right, you people who know how to knit: can you tell me how to change colours? Do I just leave a whole buncha the end of the new colour and continue as before, or what?

yes. you just stop with the color you're using and pick up with the next color. you can also tie a little knot to connect the one you've stopped using to the one you've picked up. i do that especially when my yarn is slippery.

does that make enough sense?

I sort of tie one strand onto another and cut it off- but that's probably wrong. I'm only making scarves...

Cut a couple inches down. Tie where you want the color change to be. Continue as usual, letting the ends and knot work into the piece.

Yes, you can do it the normal boring way like these other people suggest.
OR!
You can dye the yarn you're using at the point where you want it to change colours. Much more challenging!

For that matter, why use knitting needles?
