Sep. 2nd, 2002 09:41 pmOkay, I saw Ghost World last week, and on the cover of one of the old '78 albums I'm sure I saw the name R. Crumb, who as far as I know never recorded anything, but on the contrary was a great underground cartoonist.
A Salon article I found while confirming my assumptions also adds this:
In an essay from "The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book," the artist describes his passion for old 78s that began when he heard "Happy Days and Lonely Nights," a 1928 record by Charlie Fry's Million Dollar Pier Orchestra. Enthusiastically, Crumb avows his love for this old music and other artifacts of the era. The essay is titled: "To Be Interested in Old Music Is To Be a Social Outcast!"
I'm almost certain that this allusion to Crumb is deliberate on th part of Daniel Clowes (who wrote the comic book and co-wrote the screenplay), as the character of Seymour doesn't exist in the comic.
