Can anyone who speaks French translate "Welcome to the kingdom of the dark" accurately for me? I don't trust online translators to get the grammar and tense right.

. . .if I can find my french dictionary to check a couple noun-genders, I might.

(I hate genders. I can SPEAK the damn language fine . . . .)

"bienvenu au Royaume de la Nuit"

Kingdom of the Night, not Dark - dark is not noun, it's an adjective. Black is "noir" - I think that would be said "bienvenu au Royaume Noir", Black Kingdom.

Joys of translating - it never works quite right.

::amends:: That I've ever come across. If something is a "dark green", it's "vert fort" or "vert foncee" - strong green, dark green (but that dark doesn't translate to a noun).

Nuit works. Thanks!

I couldn't find the page I have bookmarked with the saying that was over one of the entrances to the Parisian (Parisienne?) catacombs ... and wanted to use something similar for the book cover for Shadow Boys that I have to mock up.

... Although, knowing my luck, I'll find it and it'll be in Latin instead.

While you're here, do you want to suggest a suitably French word for my catacomb dwellers? I was going to name them "catariens" because I'd been informed it meant "cat-hole" as in, bolt hole sort of thing. Then a French speaker informed me that it was a bad translation, and meant "cat-flap". *headdesk* Any suggestions? I'll love you forever ...

*grins* I always had the reverse problem with Japanese (when I still knew it a bit). I could *write* it fine ... but because I wasn't fluent, I had more trouble speaking, because you get less time to parse your sentence before sending it out into the world. ;)

Japanese had no genders in its words. WOO!

Mrrf. :/ There I can't help you so much, because I'd be worried that any word I'd use would have connotations on it that you don't want - that's more of a slang-thing, which our courses never covered. :( Sorry.

See, it doesn't have to be a slang-thing. Formal French is fine. It's kinda like these French boys arrived in this world 100 years ago (or whenever) and gave themselves a name, but they're only interacting with English speakers.

::shrugs:: Almost call them the denuits then - "hommes de nuits". But smooshed together, because humans are always lazy about their language.

What I'm more worried about is something like a Francophone thinkin that "cock" is a Good Term To Use for a male rooster; since we weren't taught slang, some of the "proper" terms . . .AREN'T anymore. And the boys wouldn't call themselves something that meant something Wrong in French implied, you know?

*grins* Not even REMOTELY. I am trapped in a Mac computer lab working on homework, and my only friend in this class didn't bother coming in. I am currently drawing my front cover. (We have to design a book, so I figure why not do my own?)

That sounds absolutely terrible. :) I am currently contemplating making supper and spamming you. Whee! That and I just posted about my poll from yesterday.

Hmm. That could work. The only problem I have is that I already have another, separate group of boys called the Shadow Boys, and I wonder whether the names wouldn't be too similar.

*dies* That's kinda funny.
Oh yeah. Well, I can also try running it past rincemaj. He lived in France a few years back.

Heee. Well, that could be remarked on. :3

Yeeeah. See, I HAVE run into this ALL the time with ESL friends. And, for that matter, friends from other English-speaking countries where the slang is different. So I tend to try and stay very alert for it. :3

Googling for a whole lot of images for reference for what I'm drawing and doing my layout in Quark.

I'd rather read your stuff at home, anyway.

It could ... I think I'd rather have something directly relating to the catacombs, to mark them apart. *is not demanding or anything if you can't be arsed, I'll go back to using Google's Language tools*
They're similar enough groups as it is. ;)

*nodnod* Most of the people I went to school with who were ESL had been here for years an' years, but when I worked in the La Trobe Language Centre (where they taught new migrants English), I came across a bit of it.

Quark's a layout program for books and magazines and suchlike.

... I was drawing my front cover, but I scanned it and I hate it, and it makes a much better title page. Which means I have to think up something for the cover, and draw it. MEH.

I know. :D

Well, I was thinking of something slightly less direct, and more oblique. But since I have been asking a lot of you today, I'll go look up Google in a bit. ;)

Thanks for all your help.

In terms of the effect you're going for, the closest would be:

Bienvenu(e) au royaume des tenebres (with a 'grave' accent on the second 'e' in the last word)

I knew all those years in a French school would come in handy one day! ;)

(O' course, I suspect I'm not going to use it now, because I've changed where the illustration is used. Le sigh.)

grrr ;)

If you need any other French translation, just ask.

Oh, and you're the third friend of mine in a month to ask for a translation of dark, darkness, etc.

Maybe I need to reassess who I'm surrounding myself with? ;)
