I am tempted to create a community for the discussion of differences between British & American English. [livejournal.com profile] vonlooney could be guest lecturer.

By the by, are nits called nits in England? Or are they head lice?

head lice are head lice. Nits are the eggs.

I have a little sister in junior school. Believe me, I know. *glares at sis* =)

We call them nits.. all stages of the life cycle. I don't think people really differentiate. Until they are told the different stages have different names.

The New Zealand stance. We use English spellings but a have a whole raft of different uses of words.

We use lift and elevator, depends on where specifically you are from at times) taps not faucets, footpath and pavement but I don't think I've heard sidewalk here. Bonnet and boot, occasionally I'll hear trunk..

How exactly did the Americans manage to take the word for an elephant's nose and turn it into a word for the boot of a car?

Nits, usually.

Both, but nits more than head lice.

Australia's the same when it comes to words... though I think footpath's more common than pavement.

Ah, but trunk is also a piece of travelling storage. My money would be on some derivation of that.

Nits. Rarely anything else, though I did come across a strange Geordie variation, which I have since forgot. *curses memory*
