Feb. 12th, 2004 03:39 pmWow. I had a weird dream last night.
When we were talking
tahlemaryn on Tuesday, she was talking about her job as a movie projectionist. This was a job I'd been interested in ever since
filmbuff had talked about it. The difference now was that Tahlemaryn described some of the actual technical aspect of it, and my techie brain went WHEE!
Last night I dreamt that I was doing a trial shift as projectionist, but it was ridiculously complex. There was a board, about the same size and shape as a lighting board (for those who know the Theatreworks board, one like that). It controlled just about everything. There were a set of sliders for dimmers (or "shade" as my dream called them), and two different sets of sliders (about four sliders per set) that controlled the lights. I don't know the difference between the two sets of sliders. I was too busy trying to memorise the layout of the board. There was this weird verticle disc drive in the middle of the board, where the soundtrack CD went, and another disc drive (for 3 1/2 inch floppy) on the left hand end, which I can only assume was for saving your settings. That's what the drive's for on a lighting desk. There was some big button (I don't know what it did) on the top left of the board. And this is just the part of the board that I learned how to use.
You also had to thread the actual film through the board (WTF? I know), underneath where the soundtrack went, so you had to thread the film first. The film getting twisted, but now I'm awake, I don't see that as so much of a personal failure as it is a totally fucking stupid way for my brain to decide to run things.
Anyway. So if theatre projecting was anywhere near as hard as it was in my dreams, I don't want to know. *grins*

Look! Randall icon. It matches my layout.
Feb. 12th, 2004 11:37 pmCox and Steph rocked up today to give me my birthday present because Cox is pissing off to Tasmania to start a new life. Cox does these awesome portraits of people using his airbrushing-type skills, so I have this large photo-realistic portrait of me looking evil done entirely black and red. It's really cool, but I'm a bit weird about seeing photos of me, and I'm afraid of letting it in my room while I'm sleeping in case it tries to eat my soul. It's giving me this weird look as we speak. Still, awesomely cool, and if it wasn't so large I'd put it on my scanner and show you.
That was about it for my day, really, apart from me not doing anything my mother wanted me to do because Cox and Steph were over. I just didn't expect them to want to hang around, and Cox was also an hour later than planned, I just couldn't go and pick up Kara and pick up Mum's tickets for some ball thing. I have failed as a daughter, obviously, but that's nothinig new.
What else? I did a graphic for
deadspiders's birthday tomorrow. It's not übercool, as I drew it with a mouse--and that's drew drew, not used the mouse and the polygonal lassoo to select the area and then colour it--but I still think it's kinda nifty. I just have to remember to post it tomorrow. Alternatively, I could do it tonight. Most people aren't up as late as I normally am, right?
I also redesigned my LJ, by which I mean I went back to the default purple because it's pretty and tinted one of my photos to put in the background. I was getting sick of the brown, and I was planning on switching to Slytherin Green, but I like this purple too.
I've redrawn the damn glove pattern I was working on a few months ago. I'm really hoping it'll fit this time, but of course one has no guarantees for these things. I need some material for a mock-up, though, which is where it all falls down. I had some leftover panne, but good lord above that stuff is a bitch to work with. On a small scale, at least. The material distorted to the degree where I just threw it out after attempting to cut it out. I still have black dust all over my desk from the stupid stuff. I did design and colour the most awesome design for putting on them once I get the pattern right and them cut out and so forth, though. Makes it all worth it.
I've picked up my Slytherin scarf again, and done a little more work on that. I've come to the conclusion that it won't be finished until it's longer than I am tall, though, so this might yet take some time.
