It's the Apotcalypse.
Jul. 21st, 2007 03:31 pmIt's Pottergeddon today.
I've actually been deliberately made aloof, because Nat and I had our kinesiology exam this morning (Steph isn't persuing it, so didn't bother to go). Steph bought a copy for us, and one for Nat, while we were in the exam. We didn't finish until some time after 12.30 (at a guess), as we had to wait for an hour to have our practical. Nat and I walked to the nearby Borders in the break as it was a) warm, and b) had books in it. I like bookshops. Unfortunately, it was filled with Potterheads (something that surprised me, as I thought they'd all be at the Borders event at the nearby Federation Square), which made it hard to get around. As there wasn't even anything entertaining in the metaphysical section (oh, I'm sorry, "Occult". Though I don't think it can be classified as "occult" if it's in Borders), we wandered off again. I found a tiny statue of Thoth, about three inches high, in a nearby crystal shop, but the woman behind the counter was too busy sticking gold heart stickers to a box for the previous customer to attend to me, so I gave it up. I only had $7 in my wallet, nothing in my account, and I wasn't sure how late it was. If I'd known they were running half an hour late with the practicals, I wouldn't have bothered.
We didn't get home until after 1.30, so I made lunch while Steph read, and then Nat got out her copy and started reading too. It was very lonely, so I went and found a copy of The Order of the Phoenix to prop up on a recipe stand. I would have read Half-Blood Prince, but I found OOTP first, and I've only read each of them once.
I'm in the front room now. I've picked the pizzas for our party tonight, and am waiting for Steph to do the dishes one-handed (other hand holding open The Book, which is propped on the stove) so that she can find out if the other gluten-free guest is coming tonight. Then I'll phone through the order to Jess, who is going to pick them up and bring them over.
This is why, even if there was a copy for me to read today, I was going to leave it until tomorrow. I want to be functioning today, in the lead-up to the party. I plan to write off tomorrow and ease into a comfortable chair with a pot of tea, and possibly with some small teacakes. It will be a far more civilised approach.
I can hear them whispering at the other end of the house. I may have just bellowed at them to SHUT UP, for I intend to remain spoiler-free. I am sufficiently annoyed that I know the seventh chapter title (saw it as I was giving Nat her lunch). I can't wait to have this over, but yet I'm scared. It's not the lack of new books as much as it is the potential End Of The Fandom. I've loved it here. So much good writing, so many friends. Perhaps we just need a new author to discover – why isn't there a big Chrestomanci following, or something, I can join? Or, I suppose, Jess, Dee and I can finally finish our novels and be discovered like JKR. ;)
